It is normal for a child to catch 6–8 colds a year. A cold usually starts gradually, while flu tends to begin suddenly with high fever and fatigue.
Home care
- Offer plenty of rest and fluids (water, broth) and keep room air humidified.
- Saline nose drops are a safe, effective way to relieve congestion.
- For children over one year, a little honey can ease coughing (never give honey under one year).
- Reduce fever with the correct weight-based dose advised by a clinician.
Prevention
Hand washing, avoiding sick contacts and the seasonal flu vaccine are the most effective protection. Fruit, vegetables and enough sleep support immunity.
