Skin Allergy in Children: Care, Do Not Just Endure It

Recognising eczema and hives, everyday skin care, avoiding triggers, and when to see a doctor.

Dryness, itching and redness are among the most common skin complaints in young children. In most cases, good skin care and avoiding triggers markedly improve the condition.

What to look for

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) appears as dry, red patches around the cheeks and the elbow and knee folds. Hives are sudden, raised, itchy welts that can be an allergic reaction to food, medicine or insect bites.

Home care

  • Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser once or twice daily — this is the foundation of eczema care.
  • Bathe briefly in lukewarm water and dress the child in soft cotton clothing.
  • Avoid harsh soaps, scented detergents and wool.
  • Keep nails short and note any foods that seem to trigger flare-ups.
Seek urgent care if: the lips, eyes or face swell, breathing becomes difficult, or a rash spreads rapidly over the whole body — these can signal a severe allergic reaction.
How LULU helps: we diagnose and treat eczema, diatez, hives, infant acne and psoriasis using topical, aqueous, medicated and phototherapy approaches, and offer allergy trigger testing.
