Viral Infections: Care, Not Antibiotics

The difference between viral and bacterial illness, symptom care, and preventing spread.

Most childhood illnesses are caused by viruses — colds, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, rotavirus diarrhoea and chickenpox among them. It is important for parents to know that antibiotics do not work against viruses.

What to understand

Most viral infections clear on their own within 7–10 days as the body responds. Care mainly relieves symptoms — reducing fever, replacing fluids and rest. Antibiotics are used only when a clinician confirms an added bacterial infection.

Preventing spread

  • Wash hands often with soap and cover coughs and sneezes with the elbow.
  • Keep cups, spoons and towels separate.
  • Keep scheduled vaccinations up to date.
Watch for: repeated high fever, difficulty breathing, dehydration, severe headache, or unresponsive drowsiness — see a doctor promptly.
How LULU helps: using evidence-based diagnosis we distinguish viral from bacterial infection, avoid unnecessary antibiotics, and provide appropriate treatment and follow-up.
